It's true to say I haven't posted here recently, it would seem that most things I want to talk about are over on my Financial Storyteller blog. However, last weekend Miss604 put a note out (I think on Twitter) if anyone wanted to do a guest post about their favourite Vancouver park over on her blog.

It took me a few days but you can see the results here, part of a very interesting Metro Vancouver Park Series that she's running. There have been other guests and other parks. In preparing my post I found that it was very difficult to find much out about the history of Iona Beach Regional Park. I know it was opened in 1990, but what was there before? How and why did it get created. I know it was developed when YVR got it's second runway, but before? It's a mystery.

Still it was fun to do and I thank Miss604 for the opportunity. It also gave me the chance to show off some of Leftantler's great photos! There's more on flickr of course!

My thoughts on the night took me back to what Alex Waterhouse-Hayward was talking about at Northern Voice the week before. There is something special about seeing photgraphy printed, framed and in a gallery. Especially when it's someone you know!

As you can see below the gallery itself became very busy. There are more photos from the opening night on my flickr page which demonstrate the excitement!

It was actually like this for most of the two hours of the opening, with folk spreading out into the hallway and the Gelato shop next door.

Thanks to everyone who shared the occasion and made it such a memorable experience. If you have chance to visit the gallery over the next two weeks I strongly encourage you to do so. After you've been it would be great to hear what you thought, and whether your purchased a piece!

Of course it's easy with the first day and I'm sure my aim will be under threat before too late. I decided on the crows as I'm fairly certain nobody would want to look at 366 pictures of me.

D'Arcy Norman had a far more sensible approach, one photo every day without specifying a subject. I don't intend to blog every crow photo I take so I encourage you to head over to my flickr stream and follow them there.

Moosehat's Vancouver Moose-ings Part 118

On my now regular walk to the Stadium Skytrain station the final part of the route passes by another example of great Vancouver Public Art. This time it's far more contemporary and is a wall of Graffiti, called Beatty Wall 2007. Even on a wet dark day it brightens up the the walk. Hunting around I found reference to something called the Vancouver Graffiti Management Program. nb: I can't get a link to the official page to load :-(

This states that 'A mural program provides new, legitimate outlets for graffiti writers and other artists to display their work. Interested property owners can choose to donate a wall for the program, and the City will facilitate the process and provide the supplies.'

I've not seen any other examples of this in the downtown core but I think it's a cracking way of creating something really positive by connecting with your community.

Stew's stew by Leftantler

Back in 2004 when Leftantler and I visited Vancouver we made a big effort to network with local people. The idea was to learn about the city from the people who lived and worked there and not rely on the tourist story. This is how I got to meet Ean Jackson in person.

I quickly learnt that Ean is 100% full on. In everything. This man does not take exercise he runs the 180km Sunshine Coast Trail non-stop in 43 hours or so! We did our first snow-shoeing with Ean and I ended up following him over giant cliffs into tens of feet of powder snow!

What I've learnt since 2004, apart from the fact that the man is clearly CRAZY, is that Ean is a generous, supportive and now a very valued friend. Today is his 50th birthday and much as I did for my 40th, he is doing exactly what he wants to do. In Ean's case of course this means a triathlon and something I feel brave enough to try - A chili cook-off.

I've never cooked a chili, so I started studying the various cookbooks we have and believe I've come up with a cracker! So I dedicate this chili and this blog post to Ean, Happy Birthday you crazy canuck ... looking forward to the party!
